West Feliciana Parish Outdoor Photos
West Feliciana Parish (county) has a variety of outdoor activities for you enjoyment.
If hiking is your pleasure, there are several locations. Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge, location of the National Bald-cypress tree, has several trails. All trails are level walking through huge virgin cypress mixed among new growth trees. The Nature Conservency's Mary Ann Brown Preserve has both flat and highly trails with wooden bridges. Just minutes from downtown St. Francisville. Tuncia Wildlife Management Area, north of St. Francisville has primitive and ATV trails. Hunting is allowed, so be sure not to hike during hunting season. Clark Creek WMA (also known as Tunica Falls) is located across the Mississippi stateline about 35 minutes from St. Francisville. Numerous water falls from very small to 30 feet in height can be found on well maintain trails, primitive trails and walking the creek bottom. While visiting Audubon State Historic Site (Oakley House) take time to hike their trail with easy walking on level ground, which is especially enjoyable during the spring bird migration. Another great location is the West Feliciana Parish Sports and Recreations Park. There are several steep grades in most trails.
There are a couple of waterways to go canoeing or kayaking. When the water is right, usually beginning in early April, Cat Island NWR is ideal to view the refuge under water from the Mississippi River. There is little to no current making an easy paddle while viewing the large bald-cypress trees and wildlife. Make sure to ask for directions, bring a compass and water. Cell phones may not work in this remote area.
When the water backs up from the Mississippi River during the spring months, Bayou Sara is a great waterway to paddle from low water bridge or US Hwy 66 to its mouth at the Mississippi River near the ferry landing.
For more experienced paddlers, Thompson Creek and Bayou Sara is also a fun paddle following a good rain. Be beware that the current can become very strong and fallen trees will block the creeks, also making it dangerous to navigate around or having to portage around them. Do not attempt to paddle when there's not sufficient water or you will be dragging your boat for miles.
Both Cat Island NWR and Tunica WMA offer hunting during the seasons. Cat Island NWR offers hunting by lottery and only in specfic areas away from hiking areas.. For more information go to Cat Island NWR and Tunica WMA.
The parish (county) of West Feliciana is also ideal for cycling, motorcycle and bikes. Ask for directions and map for the many hilly back roads, some very challenging. For a more leisurely ride pedal through the historic district, down to the Miss. River and Old Mahoneny road, a quiet tree canaped backroad to Cat Island NWR.
For trail riding try the West Feliciana Parish Sports and Recreations Park, just minutes from The Inn. Trails are very challenging from the steep grades.
All the above areas are also great for wildlife sightseeing and photography,
Golf is enjoyed by many at The Bluffs on Thompson Creek. An Arnold Palmer designed course, , which is about 15 minutes from The Inn. Several holes are very hilly, making an unique challenge for south Louisiana. While the course is public it is recommended to call in advance for any tournaments which may be going on. Tee times can be made by going to The Bluffs tee time request.
